Researchers Incorporate Antioxidants into PHA and PLA to Stabilize and Protect Food

A group of researchers from the University of Technology in Lodz, Poland has published a paper incorporating gallates into biobased polyesters such as PHA and PLA.

They have proven their effectiveness as stabilizers of biobased and compostable polyesters PHA and PLA.

The work shows that all the gallates tested are highly antioxidant and have a high thermal stability, which allows them to be used as stabilizers for polyesters such as PHA and PLA.

Since gallates can migrate through the polymer, and given their antioxidant character, if these new materials are used for food packaging, the shelf life of the product to be packaged could be extended.
