Anellotech converts multilayer potato bags into components to produce virgin quality PET

The American company Anellotech has managed to develop a technology, Plas-TCat, which has allowed Lay's multilayer barbecue chip bags to be converted into para-xylene, one of the precursors for obtaining PET.
High levels of conversion of these multilayer plastic residues to olefins, that is, precursors of plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, ABS or polycarbonate, have been reached.
According to the applied method, an olefin ("Hi-Olefins" method) or aromatic compounds ("Hi-BTX") such as benzene, toluene, xylene or paraxylene can be obtained as a product, the latter key in obtaining PET that would be recycled.
