The EFSA found recycled PET of GREENFIBER safe for food contact.
06/20/2014

EFSA has given his scientific opinion about the safety assessment of the recycling process "Green Fiber" based on VACUREMA Prime® technology (EU register No RECYC108) of Greenfiber International S.A. The recycled PET obtained from the process “Green Fiber” is not considered of safety concern when it is used for the manufacture of materials and articles for contact with all types of foodstuffs for long term storage at room temperature, with or without hot-fill. Trays made of this recycled PET should not be used in microwave and conventional ovens.

The process is composed of four steps. The input of the process are washed and dried PET flakes originated from collected post-consumer PET bottles, containing no more than 5% of PET from non-food consumer applications. In this process, hot caustic washed and dried flakes (step 1) are heated in a batch reactor under vacuum (step 2) and then heated in a continuous reactor under vacuum (step 3) before being extruded (step 4). Having examined the challenge tests provided, it was demonstrated that the recycling process is able to ensure that the level of migration of potential unknown contaminants into food is below a conservatively modelled migration of 0.1 microg/kg food.
