EFSA found recycled PET of SOREPLA Industry safe for food contact.
12/15/2014

EFSA has given his scientific opinion about the safety assessment of the recycling process “SOREPET GR+” (EU register No RECYC074) of SOREPLA Industry. The recycled PET obtained from the process “SOREPET GR+” is not considered of safety concern, when it is used for the manufacture of materials and articles for contact with all types of foodstuffs for long term storage at room temperature or below, with or without hot-fill.

The input of the process are hot caustic washed and dried PET flakes originated from collected post-consumer PET bottles, containing no more than 5% of PET from non-food consumer applications. In this process, washed and dried PET flakes are crystallised and heated to the decontamination temperature, the flakes are extruded into pellets, the pellets are crystallised and heated and are solid state polymerised in a continuous reactor. Having examined the challenge tests provided, it was demonstrated that the recycling process is able to ensure that the level of migration of potential unknown contaminants into food is below a conservatively modelled migration of 0.1 microg/kg food.
