Innovative materials that improve flexible packaging for retort applications.
09/06/2016

The UBE Group will present a new, innovative development from their own laboratory at the K 2016 in Dusseldorf: this new product, UBE NYLON 5033FD8, enables modification of the retort barrier packaging, thus significantly diminishing the impact of a so-called "retort shock". The product also optimizes the external appearance of the packaging.

Retort is a commonly used method of autoclave sterilization at high temperatures and pressures. This technology is frequently used in the food industry to increase the shelf life – also without cooling. This makes it the perfect solution for the modern convenience and to-go society. The retort process is a commonly used alternative in countries in which a stable cold chain cannot be guaranteed.

However, this method may lead to a “retort shock”, which damages the packaging to such an extent that air is able to penetrate and thus has a negative effect on the shelf life. The use of UBE NYLON 5033FD8 in a certain film structure significantly reduces the risk of a “retort shock”.

UBE will present this new, optimized packaging at the K 2016 at Stand E08 in Hall 6.
