Modified enzyme that degrades PET efficiently.
04/19/2018

Following previous work by Japanese researchers in which the bacterium containing PETase enzyme, capable of degrading PET, was isolated for the first time, researchers from the University of Portsmouth in the UK have worked on the structural elucidation of PETase. From the structure, they have managed to obtain a modified version of the enzyme which is most effective at degrading PET. Without a doubt, it is a great advance in order to solve the problems related to the recycling of plastics, where PET is the plastic used in the vast majority of water bottles, juices and soft drinks.
