Proposal from European Chemical Agengy) for restricting the use of microplastics
07/17/2019

The ECHA (European Chemical Agency) has proposed to restrict the use of microplastics. If the proposal prospers, the amount of microplastics could be reduced by 400,000 tons in the next two decades.

The approach of ECHA is in line with the European Parliament's request to the Commission for a European-wide ban on microplastics deliberately added to products such as cosmetics and detergents before 2020, as well as measures to minimize the release of microplastics from textiles, tires, paints and butts.

According to the evaluation of ECHA, the risks derived from the products that release microplastics in the environment are not properly controlled. Several EU Member States have already approved the ban on some uses, especially in cosmetic products that are washed.
