Lidl, first supermarket to eliminate plastic bags for fruit and vegetables and offer 100% biocomposable bags
07/02/2019

Lidl was the first supermarket to eliminate plastic bags for purchase, and now replaces the fruit and vegetable section bags with 100% biocomposable and biodegradable bags.

This new milestone will mean replacing more than 220 tons of non-biodegradable plastic, by bags that decompose within a maximum period of 12 months, without endangering the ecosystem; unlike conventional bags, which can take up to 500 years to disintegrate.

Biocomposable bags are 4 times more expensive than conventional plastic bags: it costs more than 2 million euros a year, which the company will not affect to the final customer, offering them free of charge.

This is another step in its commitment to reduce 20% of the plastic until 2025, in addition to other actions already underway such as the expansion of the assortment of fruit and vegetables in bulk or the redesign of containers with less plastic.
